How snaking works
A drain snake, or cable machine, feeds a rotating cable with a cutting or retrieving head into the line to break up or hook the blockage. It is quick and effective on hair, paper and other soft blockages, in sink, tub and smaller lines.
Its limit is that it opens a path rather than cleaning the whole pipe wall, so grease and scale can remain and the clog can return.
How hydro jetting works
Hydro jetting sends high-pressure water through a hose and nozzle that scours the inside of the pipe and flushes debris out. It removes grease, scale, sludge and fine roots from the wall along the length that is jetted.
It needs a pipe that can take the pressure and a way to get the hose into the line, and it is professional equipment, not a do-it-yourself tool.
Hydro jetting vs. snaking at a glance
| Snaking (cable machine) | Hydro jetting | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | A rotating cable breaks up or pulls out the blockage | High-pressure water scours the pipe wall |
| Best for | Hair, paper and soft blockages in sink, tub and smaller lines | Grease, scale, sludge, fine roots and recurring clogs |
| Pipe wall afterward | A path is opened; buildup can remain | Wall is cleaned along the jetted length |
| Pipe condition | Works on most pipes | Needs pipe that can take pressure; inspect first |
| Typical use | One-off clogs | Main lines, kitchen lines, repeat clogs, maintenance |
When snaking is enough
- A single sink, tub or shower is clogged for the first time
- The blockage is hair, paper or another soft obstruction
- The line is otherwise flowing normally once the clog is cleared
When to choose hydro jetting
- The same line clogs repeatedly after being snaked
- Grease buildup, such as in kitchen lines and commercial kitchens
- Scale or sludge has narrowed the pipe
- Fine roots have entered joints in the main sewer line
- You want routine maintenance of a main line
When neither is the answer
If a camera shows a cracked, collapsed, offset or sagging pipe, cleaning only treats the symptom. A sewer camera inspection shows the pipe's condition, and damaged pipe may need trenchless repair or replacement.
Can I do either myself?
A hand-operated drain auger can clear many sink and tub clogs. Jetting equipment and main-line work are best left to a professional: the pressure can damage weak pipe or cause injury, and a repeat clog usually means there is a cause that needs to be found.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is hydro jetting better than snaking?
Neither is better in every case. Snaking suits simple, one-time clogs; hydro jetting is better for grease, scale, roots and recurring clogs because it cleans the pipe wall. Many jobs use a cable first and a jet afterward.
Can hydro jetting damage pipes?
It can if the pipe is already cracked, collapsed or badly deteriorated, which is why the line should be inspected first and the pressure matched to the pipe.
How do I know which one I need?
If the clog is new and affects one fixture, a cable is often enough. If it keeps returning, affects the main line or involves grease or roots, jetting and a camera inspection are worth considering.
