What is pipe lining (CIPP)?

CIPP stands for cured-in-place pipe. A flexible liner saturated with resin is placed inside the existing sewer pipe, expanded against the pipe wall and cured so it hardens into a new, seamless pipe within the old one. It seals cracks and joints, which also closes the openings roots use.

What is pipe bursting?

In pipe bursting, a bursting head is pulled through the old pipe, breaking it outward into the surrounding soil while a new pipe, commonly HDPE, is pulled in behind it. The old pipe is replaced rather than relined, and the new pipe can sometimes be a larger size.

Pipe lining vs. pipe bursting at a glance

How it worksA resin-saturated liner is cured inside the old pipeA bursting head pulls a new pipe through the old one
Best forPipe that is cracked, leaking at joints or root-damaged but still holds its shapePipe that is badly broken or deteriorated, or needs full replacement
ResultA pipe within a pipe, with a slightly smaller inside diameterA new pipe in place of the old one
Access neededSmall access points at the ends of the sectionEntry and exit pits at the ends of the section
LimitsBadly collapsed or misaligned pipe may not be suitableNeeds room for the pits and suitable ground and utility conditions

How the decision is made

Everything starts with a camera inspection that shows the pipe's material, damage and any collapsed or offset sections. The line is then cleaned, often with hydro jetting, and measured, and the method that fits the pipe is chosen. Permits and utility locates are part of planning; see who is responsible for the side sewer in Bothell.

What happens during a trenchless repair

  1. Camera inspection to confirm the damage and the best method
  2. Cleaning the pipe so the liner or new pipe can be installed
  3. Creating small access points at the ends of the section
  4. Installing the liner and curing it, or pulling the new pipe through
  5. Final camera inspection and testing
  6. Restoring the access points

When excavation is still needed

A badly collapsed pipe, a severe misalignment or a deep sag may still need to be dug up and replaced. The inspection tells you before you commit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a pipe with roots be lined?

Usually the roots are cut and the pipe is cleaned first, then the pipe is lined if the inspection shows it is suitable. Lining seals the joints that roots used to get in.

Does lining reduce the pipe's capacity?

Lining slightly reduces the inside diameter, but the smooth new surface helps flow. Your plumber can confirm the lined pipe will have adequate capacity for the building.

Which is better, lining or bursting?

Neither is better in every case. Lining fits pipe that is damaged but intact; bursting fits pipe that is too broken to line. A camera inspection decides.
